City West

The Queensland Government, in partnership with Brisbane City Council, is developing a strategy for the urban renewal of the City West precinct. This precinct combines several currently independently planned areas including the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, the north-west CBD quarter, Milton and the Normanby area. The City West Urban Renewal Project will be prepared within the context of the South East Queensland Regional Plan 2005-26 (Smart City Master Plan) in response to the Smart State Council’s Smart Cities: rethinking the city centre report , and all of the recent/current planning and capital works projects in the vicinity of the City West Urban Renewal project area.

City West is an important part of Brisbane. It is the main western gateway to the inner city, and acts as a conduit for major transport movements by private and public transport. A considerable amount of public investment is occurring in and around the area in the form of major public projects.

City West is within walking distance of Brisbane's CBD, but retains its own unique character, due in large part to the number of heritage buildings and character residences in the area. City West's tree lined ridge forms part of the backdrop to the city. The area enjoys views of the river and the city.

Heavy traffic and transport traversing the area, and its associated infrastructure, hinder local movements in the City West precinct. The effect is a decline in local economic activity. City West is considered to be an area to travel through, but not to stop and engage others, either for business or socially.

City West Strategy

The previous City West Task Force produced the City West Strategy to guide future planning and development in the City West Precinct. This planning will be updated to confirm the vision and urban renewal initiatives for the project area, whilst incorporating the initiatives of the Smart Cities: rethinking the city centre report.

The following links relate to the original City West Strategy as developed by the City West Task Force. This material now forms the basis for the work currently being undertaken by the City West Urban Renewal Project team:
