Adult stores

State Planning Regulatory Provisions - Adult Stores

The draft provisions outline regulations to manage the location of new adult stores. New adult stores in Queensland will not be allowed within 200 metres of 'sensitive uses' such as schools and churches.

Adult store locations are regulated by local governments, like any other retail store. Prior to local government amalgamations in March 2008, only about 10% of local governments stipulated the location, visual amenity and/or accessibility of adult stores.

As this is essentially a local matter, local governments will be able to vary the standards, if they so choose, in response to their local communities. For example, local governments may specify a greater or lesser separation distance, or add to or reduce the list of 'sensitive uses'.

The provisions seek to strike a balance between responding to community concerns regarding adult store locations and allowing these legitimate businesses to operate without disadvantaging them.
