South East Queensland Water Grid

The Queensland Government's $9 billion South East Queensland Water Grid is the largest urban drought response in Australia.

The water grid is a network of two-way pipes to transport water from areas of water surplus to areas facing a shortfall. The project features more than 450 km of pipeline, two new dams, a desalination plant and three advanced water treatment plants.

The South East Queensland Water Grid will secure water supply for the region now and for the future. It represents the largest urban drought response in Australia. The water grid will give South East Queensland more water and move water to areas of highest demand. Once complete, the water grid will deliver around 350,000 megalitres of additional water a year.

The main projects that form part of the South East Queensland Water Grid are:

  • Western Corridor Recycled Water Project
  • Gold Coast desalination project
  • Southern regional water pipeline
  • Northern pipeline interconnector
  • Eastern pipeline interconnector
  • Traveston Crossing Dam 5 Wyaralong Dam
