Residential and commercial

Queensland welcomes 100,000 new residents every year on account of its robust economy and quality lifestyle, with 66% making South East Queensland home.  This continuing population growth places significant demand on residential land and housing supply and housing prices.  This demand for housing ranges from the fast-growing south-east corner to the mining districts of central Queensland to regional communities the length of the Queensland coast.

To address demand the Department of Infrastructure and Planning is leading planning and development reform, which involves streamlining Queensland’s planning and development assessment system to ease housing supply and affordability. The department is encouraging development of transit oriented developments, which integrate housing, retail and transport precincts.

The department is driving the Queensland Housing Affordability Strategy, has completed a review of land availability in the Brisbane region and is delivering a program in central Queensland addressing the housing and social impacts in thriving mining communities. Examples of innovative residential developments include the Springfield Lakes residential and educational precinct in Ipswich and the integrated residential and cruise ship precinct in Brisbane.

The department has led the development and review of the South East Queensland Regional Plan to synchronise planning and is developing and delivering five new regional plans to cover Far North Queensland, North West Queensland, Central West Queensland, South West Queensland and the Maranoa District.
