Mining and mineral processing

Global demand for minerals and base metals is strong, fuelled by continued economic growth in Asia and beyond. Queensland is well positioned to capitalise on this demand because the state’s north-west is acknowledged as a world-class region for minerals and base metals such as coal, bauxite, copper and zinc - presenting a major opportunity for our economy.

Minerals and base metals in abundant supply in the North West Mineral Province include zinc, lead, copper, gold, silver, nickel, cobalt and iron ore. Cape York is another region rich in minerals, with abundant reserves of bauxite required for the manufacture of aluminium.

The value of resources mined in Queensland exceeds $20 billion annually, with the resources sector employing 37,000 people directly and three times that number indirectly.

The Department of Infrastructure and Planning is the lead Queensland government agency coordinating the planning and delivery of vital infrastructure for our mining industry to secure its growth, sustainability and prosperity for all Queenslanders. Modern and efficient infrastructure is essential to Queensland’s mining sector remaining prosperous and world competitive.
