World demand for energy is growing, driven by factors such as rapid economic growth in developing nations, shrinking world energy reserves and increasing automobile ownership in developing nations. Queensland is well placed to capitalise on the world’s growing demand for energy and become a global leader in energy innovation. Not only is the state rich in reserves of coal and gas but the reserves position Queensland strongly to become a world leader in clean-coal technology. Queensland’s sunny climate is conducive to innovation in solar energy production and technology while the sugarcane industry and other agricultural crops equip the state for innovation in ethanol use and production. The Department of Infrastructure and Planning is the lead agency coordinating the planning and delivery of infrastructure for a Queensland that is energy rich, energy wise and secure. New infrastructure is required to secure Queensland as world competitive in energy while adopting sustainable, innovative energy technologies.
