Townsville City-Port Strategic Plan

The objective of the Townsville City-Port Strategic Plan is to provide a shared vision for an effective and sustainable interface between Townsville’s port area and the adjacent Townsville city centre. Adherence to this vision in developing the city-port interface will protect the Port of Townsville’s operational efficiencies while also enhancing the city centre’s amenity and functionality.

Background

In March 2006, The Coordinator-General was requested to undertake a strategic planning exercise on the interface between Townsville’s port and its city area. In June 2007, the Townsville City Port Strategic Plan was finalised. The plan has been developed in consultation with:

  • Townsville Port Authority
  • Townsville City Council
  • Department of Tourism
  • Regional Development and Industry
  • Queensland Transport
  • Queensland Treasury
  • Department of Main Roads.

The plan builds on previous work carried out by Townsville Port Authority and Townsville City Council.

Essential features of the plan

The plan identifies two critical planning areas:

  • the Secure Port Area, where port operations are carried out
  • the Port Interface Area between the city and the port, which requires careful planning to ensure that any development in this area does not adversely impact on the port.

The plan primarily focuses on the Port Interface Area and examines the interconnections between various projects within it. In addition, individual precinct development plans have been prepared for key projects within the Port Interface Area.

Current uses of the plan

The plan is being used by the Townsville Port Authority and the Townsville City Council to assist with their forward strategic planning.
