Local Growth Management Strategies

The South East Queensland (SEQ) Regional Plan 2002-26 estimates the total number of new dwellings required in each local government area to accommodate the region’s growth.

It also sets targets for the number of new dwellings to be provided by infill and redevelopment in major urbanised areas.

These targets are based on the land available for residential development in the Urban Footprint and the SEQ Regional Plan’s strategic directions and policies.

How councils intend to achieve these targets and accommodate growth in their respective areas will be determined through their local growth management strategy.

The strategy demonstrates how population growth will be accommodated not only in terms of residential dwellings, but also employment, infrastructure and open spaces.

Consultation with adjoining local councils, state agencies and local communities is required during the preparation of a strategy.

Once the strategy is finalised, each local council is required to amend its local planning scheme to reflect the strategy and align with the SEQ Regional Plan’s urban development policies.
